How to do a physiological sigh
- Inhale gently through your nose. Stop when your lungs feel comfortably full.
- Add a smaller second inhale. It should be a brief sip of air, not a strain.
- Exhale slowly. Let the breath leave through your mouth over a little more time than the two inhales took.
- Pause and assess. If you feel comfortable, you can try another cycle. Stop if you feel dizzy, short of breath, or more distressed.
Keep the breath easy. Bigger is not necessarily better. People with a respiratory or cardiovascular condition, or anyone advised to limit breathwork, should ask a healthcare professional what is appropriate for them.
Why the double inhale is used
Sighing is a normal respiratory pattern. The second inhale can recruit additional lung volume, while the longer exhale shifts the timing of the breathing cycle toward exhalation. That is a more careful explanation than saying everyday stress always collapses air sacs or causes carbon dioxide to build up. Anxiety and breathing patterns vary, and a short exercise cannot identify what is causing a physical symptom.
The practical cue is easier than the physiology: two comfortable inhales, then an unhurried exhale. If focusing on breathing makes anxiety sharper, switch to an external grounding task such as naming five things you can see.
What the cyclic sighing research found
A 2023 randomized remote study compared five minutes a day of cyclic sighing, box breathing, cyclic hyperventilation with breath retention, and mindfulness meditation over one month. The breathing groups improved daily positive mood more than the mindfulness group, and cyclic sighing produced the largest reduction in respiratory rate among the tested practices. The study supports repeated daily practice as a promising stress-management exercise.
It does not establish that a single physiological sigh outperforms every other calming technique, that everyone will feel an immediate change, or that the exercise treats an anxiety disorder. The protocol involved five minutes of daily practice and self-reported measures, not a universal one-breath result.
Using the exercise in a difficult moment
Try the pattern before a tense conversation, after a stressful call, or while winding down at night. The goal is to give your body a low-effort pause, not to force calm. After one or two comfortable cycles, decide whether you need another breath, a grounding exercise, a glass of water, a change of room, or support from another person.
